Black Lives Matter @ ACDC

High up and across from the Atlanta City Detention Center lies a vent-lined wall on MARTA’s Garnett station. Here, I place a mural with an aggressive but simplistic message, with the hope that it may be visible by prisoners through the small slitted windows available in the building. Black Lives Matter, a popular phrase and hashtag encompassing the modern grief of Black people in the face police brutality, is written with a bold but handwriting-esque font. The iconic raised fists are shackled by handcuffs with breaking chains. This creates a call to action of breaking literal and metaphorical chains, urging both prisoners to stand up for themselves and onlookers to help break down the prison industrial complex. Furthermore, as a political message, I chose to give the mural a more graffiti and spray paint-esque look, as opposed to the clean lines more represented on positive, uplifting murals.
