a proposed mural
made in Illustrator and Photoshop
fall 2021

High up and across from the Atlanta City Detention Center lies a vent-lined wall on MARTA’s Garnett station. Here, I place a mural with an aggressive but simplistic message, with the hope that it may be visible by prisoners through the small slitted windows available in the building. Black Lives Matter, a popular phrase and hashtag encompassing the modern grief of Black people in the face police brutality, is written with a bold but handwriting-esque font. The iconic raised fists are shackled by handcuffs with breaking chains. This creates a call to action of breaking literal and metaphorical chains, urging both prisoners to stand up for themselves and onlookers to help break down the prison industrial complex. Furthermore, as a political message, I chose to give the mural a more graffiti and spray paint-esque look, as opposed to the clean lines more represented on positive, uplifting murals.

a fictional campaign for Tierra Whack
made in Blender, Photoshop, and Illustrator
fall 2019

In February and March of 2019, Tierra Whack launched a social media campaign under the hashtag #whackhistorymonth. During this month, she released five brand new singles directly onto her twitter: Only Child, CLONES, Gloria, Wasteland, and Unemployed.

Here, I use a simple calendar to touch upon critic and audience receptions to the songs. The cover art of each single is pinned on the date of their release. Information delivered includes critic’s reviews, lyrics, fan tweets, and a view count on Unemployed’s music video.

Doubling down on the theme of the writing process, the album art features the same infographic and notebook-calendar, but placed into a still scene. Here the calendar is now riddled with objects strewn and placed atop it. The objects are rendered in 3D, and vary in realism in their textures in order to evoke Whack’s brand of surrealism.

Bread came out of this need for Black businesses to be more known and patronized within the Black Community. Named after the popular phrase: “Let’s get this bread,” the application promotes and fosters the entrepreneurship and hustle of Black business.
